Autumn is a great time for planting perennials when the soil is still warm and the plants can establish themselves prior to the on-set of winter.Macrophylla Hydrangeas are large leaved and can be referred to as the ‹common hydrangeaŚ but there is nothing common about Hydrangea Expression. This wonderful variety has florets are almost waterlily-like. The younger buds glow creamy/greeny tones, to give a bi-colour effect and then gradually turning blue or pink depending on your soil type. Flowers are pink in lime/alkaline soils and blue in acid / lime-free soils. It has a really long flowering period, from late spring and continues until frosts. In autumn the dead flowers can be dried and are great to use in a flower arrangement or autumn wreath to hang on your front door, whilst in winter they still look lovely, especially when covered with a layer of frost or a light dusting of snow. The dense mop heads on this variety have been selected to stay upright, so they will not flop over like some varieties. Notable for its sturdy stems, it will bloom on both older wood, and fresh growth, making it ideal for northern gardens where frosts can be harder in the winter. The Hydrangea Expression is also more compact than many mophead hydrangeas, making them ideal for smaller gardens or to be grown in containers where their long flowering season will make especially valuable.Height and spread at maturity 100cm (3ft).
